Prerequisites
The decision to work from home in a virtual office requires planning and preparation. The most urgent priority, of course, is setting up an efficient office.
Here are suggestions to insure success:
- Quiet, private work space. Your workspace should be in a separate room with a desk, comfortable chair, door and even a lock.
- Desktop or Laptop PC. Computer should have:
- 1Ghz-2Ghz processor
- Windows XP or Windows 7 (Newer isn't always better; some companies aren't set up to use Vista.)
- 15-17" monitor
- Virus and spyware protection software and a working firewall.
- Software programs that may be required includes Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word and Excel), WinZip and/or Adobe Acrobat reader.
- Broadband Internet connection. DSL and cable or wireless network inside the home.
- Land line phone service. VOIP cable phones are not usually acceptable. Should be a dedicated phone line. Features on the phone line, such as call waiting, call blocking and voice mail, are often not allowed or must be disabled.
- Corded telephone (with buttons not on the handset). Plus a corded (not wireless) telephone headset with a noise-canceling microphone.
- Email account. With professional email name/address.
